After each round of dealing, a betting interval is held. This is a time when players are given an opportunity to raise the bet or to check. When the last player raises, the betting interval ends.

Each betting interval is followed by another round of drawing cards. All but one player folds, resulting in the remaining player collecting the pot without revealing their hand. If a player does not want to discard the cards, they may lay them down and stay in.

To win, the best five-card hand must be the highest ranking combination. A pair is two identical cards. A straight is made up of five consecutive cards from the same suit. Ties are broken by the rank of a card. Most common hands are 6-4-3-2-A, although aces are sometimes treated as the lowest card. Other hands are rarer.

When a player has a winning poker hand, he or she takes the pot. Alternatively, other players can win side pots. These pots are usually set at a higher limit than the main pot.

The first bettor is the player with the highest ranking combination. He or she must bet a minimum amount in the first betting interval. After that, the other players must match or raise the first bettor’s bet. Depending on the specific variation of the game, this can take place in later betting intervals.

Another way to win a pot is by making a bet that no other player calls. For example, if a player lays down a straight and no other players call, the player wins the pot.

After a final betting interval, a showdown takes place. At this point, the cards are revealed and each player’s hand is evaluated. The player with the highest ranking hand is the winner of the pot.

Poker is typically played with plastic chips, or ceramic chips. Chips are easier to handle than money. An alternative to using chips is to swap them for coins. Some games have special types of poker bets, such as those that are made with the chips used to shuffle the deck.

Most modern versions of poker are played with a forced bet, a form of ante. When a player makes a bet, he or she must place the number of chips required to make the bet into the pot. Alternatively, a player can bet blind, meaning that the player lays down no cards.
